The proverbial Left is always coming out with new ideas and
agendas for public ‘Improvement,’ with their own private gain in mind, as the
California Governor Gray Davis has proposed to make community services a requirement
to graduating from state colleges and universities (my previous post ‘“Public Service” -- Or Disservice?’ addresses
this topic as well).
California’s
number one liberal newspaper jumped at this opportunity, supporting it 100%
saying “What could be wrong with teaching students, as the governor puts it,
that ‘a service ethic…[has] lasting value in California?” and that this
requirement “could reap a valuable return in a new generation of civically
minded citizens.”
Forget
the ‘good’ it would do for the community, there are already 90 million people
volunteering for state projects of their own free will, the heart of the matter
is turning students into obedient followers that will not second guess the
government, will not question their orders to ‘volunteer’, and will have almost
completely lost the ability to freely think through what the government has
told them is the right.
